"One of my passengers, Michele, took flying lessons 12 years ago, but stopped because of a car accident. She told me last week that she is so inspired by me that she is going to resume her training.
I had a fantastic time doing this!" Lesley P.
Comments:
"I took my daughter (First Time!) - just her and me and I was rather nervous the night before. Have been hesitating on this for a long time and thought this week could make it memorable. I introduced another six ladies over the next two days" Amy C.

"On the day we provided opportunities for girls from around Ghana to come and watch and learn more about aviation and engineering. We actually flew over one hundred girls – mostly by the three male pilots – but I flew eight and also gave speech about how aircraft fly and engines work as part of the launch of the flying doctors programme at the same event. All of the aircraft were built in Ghana by Ghanaian girls.
For most of the girls it was their first time on an airfield or near an airplane. Many people said that it was the best day they had ever had. We also gave every girl that flew a cotton scarf with the Centennial of Women Pilots logo, a pencil, a ruler and an eraser as part of their wonderful day of discovery.
We would have flown many more girls if the weather had permitted. Nonetheless, I am going on to become a flying instructor and will introduce many, many more girls to flying in the years to come!!!"

"We flew from Luxembourg (ELLX) to Bitburg (EDRB), in neighbouring Germany. While the visibility was perfect, the wind was rather strong – 18kts headwind to go there but at least it was straight down the centre-line. And we made it back in extra quick time!" Susan F.

"Maureen Kenney, fellow San Fernando Valley 99, and her daughter-in-law, Shinta Kenney, a non-pilot, came flying with me on 3/8/10 in my pretty blue and white Cherokee. We flew from Whiteman Airport (Pacoima) to El Monte, CA for lunch. It was cloudy, so we flew at 2500’, but it was smooth and clear. The mountains to the north were obscured under dark clouds and the Los Angeles Basin to the south was much clearer with scattered clouds and good visibility. I showed Shinta the pre-flight and let her taxi and fly a bit. She was amazed and enthralled! It was a beautiful and fun flight!" Ceci S.

Sharing the dream of flight with the next generation
"When I was 24, I decided to get a pilot's license. Inspired by that, my father followed suit a year later, getting his license at age 58.
Together, we went on to fly a single-engine plane around the continent of Australia, a journey I documented with my film "FLYABOUT" which has been showing at AirVenture in Oshkosh for the past two years.
For those of you who haven't seen the film, let me tell you that the relationship between my father and me became one of the main challenges on that journey. The unavoidable "switch of generations" plays an important role in the movie.
I'm happy to add that my father and I have safely made it to "the other side". But it wasn't easy. Now, eleven years later, I have two children myself. With all the "Flyabout" screenings in the past months, they have become aware of the fact that their mommy is a pilot, and my six-year-old daughter is now constantly begging me to take her up in a plane.
I was waiting around for the right opportunity, and when I heard about this worldwide record-setting event, I knew this was it. This was the time to introduce my own daughter to the dream of flying.
I ended up introducing a total of three "women" to flying today. Two of them were six years old and VERY excited about the experience of flying in a small airplane over their own house, school and past the Hollywood sign. But they were probably most excited when I handed them their certificate and told them that they had just contributed to setting the "World Record of Most Women Introduced To Flying In A Single Day".
When I asked them what their favorite part was about the flight, Lauren Galles said: "The landing!". My own daughter, Louisa Petrillo, smiled and said: "The moment when the plane went up and then down. That felt a little bit like being in a roller coaster."
My own favorite part? - Finally being able to share my dream of flying with my daughter."

"I sent an invitation to fly to all of the women who work at the High School where I teach. Five adventurous women, one who is afraid of heights, came to the airport on March 8, 2010. One woman, who was afraid to fly, chose to fly and overcome her fear on March 11, 2010. I was scheduled to fly a number of Physically Disabled girls on March 6, 2010, but the flights were postponed due to weather." Allyn A.

"I'm happy to participate in this exciting time!! My passenger is my niece currently in High-School. We flew to the Ocean and did touch-and go's in the pattern. We flew on March 8th at 11 AM. I hope this stirs her interest for her first flight!!" Norva G.

"We started our week of centennial celebration on March 6, 2010, with two women pilot going on checkrides. The first, Linda Artman received her instrument rating added on to her private pilot certificate and the second, Leah Dunn become a certificated private pilot! Leah finished her flight lessons with a local woman flight instructor, Joan Evert.
On March 7, 2010, four local women pilots, (Linda, Leah, Mary and Joan), along with 9 women passengers, took to the skies for a tribute to KPFN and KECP. KPFN is due to close with the opening of our new airport, Northwest Florida Beaches Int’l Airport in May. We departed KPFN, flew along Florida’s Gulf Coast, headed north across the bay to fly a pattern at KECP, and returned to KPFN. Our ATC support came from our only women air traffic controller in the KPFN tower and the women from Tyndall Approach. A local news cameraman (WJHG), and several other men also joined in on some flights.
March 8 was our big day for the Girl Scouts. Turnout wasn’t as big as we hoped, (testing in our local schools), however, those who flew, loved it! The Girls Scouts worked on badges as they learned about aerodynamics and women in history. Linda and Leah took several small groups on a tour of the KPFN tower and provided safety briefings prior to their flights. Mary took a total of 13 women passengers and Joan took 7. One of the Scouts who flew with Mary, (Kyle Jacobsen), went a second time with Joan for an actual flight lesson! Several more flights were scheduled for the week, however turbulent winds precluded us from giving intro flights. We will conduct those in the future.
This could be the beginning of an annual "I’ll Fly for Cookies" campaign!
KPFN Totals
March 7 - 4 women pilots and 9 women passengers
March 8 – 2 women pilots and 20 women passengers" Joan E.

"This was the first flight in a small airplane for 56-year old, Jan Hayes. Jan had always been terrified to fly and she did not want her husband to take flying lessons when he suggested it several years ago. Mary Huston had brought her friend Jan Hayes from Texas to Gulfport, Mississippi for R & R after the death of Jan’s mother. They stayed with Mary’s friend Janet Miller at her and grass airfield - Shade Tree Field.
Janet had gotten her private pilot certificate in 2005 at the age of 56 and bought her Varga at that time. When Jan was invited to participate in this event, she hesitantly agreed.
Janet and Jan flew for one hour down the Mississippi Coast Line and she thoroughly enjoyed the flight. As soon as they landed, Jan told her husband that he had to come to Mississippi and fly with her new friend Janet Miller in her Varga. She also told him that she was OK for him taking flying lessons. If it had not been for this event, Jan would have never experienced the wonderful world of Aviation."
